IT ASSET MANAGEMENT

An internal platform tracking the full IT equipment lifecycle company-wide for a global engineering firm — a cross-platform mobile app backed by a REST API with automated reporting.

01 — THE BRIEF

A global engineering organization tracked its IT assets the way most large companies do: manually, in scattered records that drift out of date the moment hardware moves. IT teams burned effort keeping lists alive instead of managing equipment.

The mission: design and build a single source of truth for the full equipment lifecycle — from assignment to retirement — usable where the hardware actually lives, not just at a desk.

02 — OPERATING CONSTRAINTS

  • Company-wide scope: one system for the entire equipment lifecycle, not a departmental tool.
  • IT teams work on the move — the platform had to travel with them, on any device.
  • Reporting had to be automated: the manual effort was the problem being solved.
  • Enterprise environment: internal platform, corporate delivery. All work under NDA.

03 — SYSTEM STRUCTURE

CROSS-PLATFORM MOBILE APP

React Native + Expo — one codebase serving the IT teams wherever the equipment is.

REST API

Single backend contract for every asset operation across the lifecycle.

FIREBASE / GOOGLE CLOUD

Managed backend services carrying the asset data and access control.

AUTOMATED REPORTING

The reports IT teams used to assemble by hand, generated by the system.

04 — KEY DECISIONS

DECISION 01

Mobile-first, because assets don't live at desks

Tracking fails when updating a record requires walking back to a workstation. A cross-platform app puts the source of truth in the technician's hand.

DECISION 02

One codebase for every platform

React Native + Expo shipped iOS and Android from a single codebase — full coverage at solo-developer speed.

DECISION 03

Managed cloud over self-hosted infrastructure

Firebase and Google Cloud carried auth, data, and scale so the build effort went into the asset workflow itself.

DECISION 04

Automate the reporting, not just the records

The measurable win was effort: reports that consumed IT time now generate themselves from live data.

05 — OUTCOME

A large engineering org got a single source of truth for its IT assets — and cut the manual tracking effort that used to keep the lists alive.
